This can happen for multiple reasons and a mechanic needs to diagnose the specific cause for this code to be triggered in your situation. Our certified mobile mechanics can come to your home or office to perform the Check Engine Light diagnostic.

The P code indicates that the Powertrain Control Module PCM has discovered an abnormality in the transmission fluid pressure sensor circuit. There may be one or more causes for the P code. One may be a faulty electronic pressure control solenoid. Another could be that there is something wrong with your transmission fluid pressure sensor, or that your vehicle has hydraulic blockages inside the internal transmission fluid passages.

You may also have low transmission fluid, dirty or contaminated transmission fluid, mechanical internal transmission failures. A faulty PCM or transmission control module is rare but possible. Unfortunately, there may be not be any noticeable symptoms. Or you may have a disabled shifting function or your torque converter clutch may fail to engage or disengage. Additional symptoms may include transmission slippage, harsh shifting, decreased fuel efficiency, an overheating transmission, and a stored code.

Please be aware that other torque converter clutch, gear ratio, shift solenoid, lock up, or transmission slippage codes often fall under P Always start any transmission diagnosis with an inspection of the transmission fluid dipstick. If the fluid smells burned or looks abnormal it is inadequate and should be changed.

Burned fluid is a good indication that the transmission is operating at a low fluid level and unfortunately may mean that your vehicle has suffered major internal mechanical failure. Also, be sure to look for burned or shorted wiring and always replace circuitry and connectors that appear to be in bad shape. If the system connectors, wiring, and components seem to be in good shape, connect your scanner to the diagnostic connector and record all freeze frame data and trouble codes.

If the transmission fluid seems to be in good shape but the fluid level is low, add enough fluid to locate a leak and then repair it. If the transmission works properly and the code does not appear again, then it was probably caused by transmission slippage from a low fluid level and pressure condition. If the code returns and the transmission suffers from delayed engagement, you will need to check your pump pressure.

To do this you will need a manual pressure gauge. It is often the case that electronic pressure control solenoid, transmission pressure sensor, and system wiring malfunctions are often overlooked and high-pressure pumps are often replaced when they do not need to be. The P code is serious and, unless you are highly skilled and possess the proper tools, should be looked at by a professional technician.

It may also damage other components on your vehicle. It is always better to take your car to a technician as soon as you notice signs of change. Letting a problem go on for too long can have costly and at times irreversible effects on your vehicle. If your transmission fluid smells burned you will need to remove the transmission pan and check for clutch material and other debris.

If you do find these contaminants in the transmission pan, you will need a total rebuild, a fluid flush and replacement, and a new torque converter. Otherwise your transmission will not function properly.

45RFE Transmission Teardown Inspection - Transmission Repair

Many older vehicles have sensor problems that occur due to prolonged stress on the drivetrain. Because a P code can mean many things, it can be very difficult to diagnose and repair. Your best option may be to get your car into a technician who has the proper tools to diagnose your problem more accurately and efficiently. YourMechanic offers certified mobile mechanics who will come to your home or office to diagnose and repair your vehicle.

Fixed that. Next the Power Steering Pump was whining. After replacing the Power Steering Pump, the Truck wouldn't shift!! Long hesitation going into Drive and long hesitation going into Reverse. Truck is in Limp Mode.

I have to raise the RPMs to get the truck to move at all. Here are my questions: Could the mechanic have done anything at all wrong when changing out the Power Steering Pump?? Knicked a wire? Cut a ground? Anything at all that would show these symptoms?

I do see a line of wires running down the right hand side of the passenger floor board. I have dried the Floor Board out as much as I could. After replacing the Heater Core, the truck drove fine. I did see the radio going in and out and the horn would blare out of nowhere. So I assumed something got wet. But not sure what exactly. Truck still drove fine. I put about 60 or 70 miles on it since the Heater Core was replaced.

NEVER a shifting or transmission issue. Only started after the Power Steering Pump was changed. Which leads me to believe he did somethingCheck the "Possible Causes" listed above. Visually inspect the related wiring harness and connectors. Check for damaged components and look for broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded connector's pins.

The auto repair labor rates vary by location, your vehicle's make and model, and even your engine type. When is the code detected? The P code is detected when the Engine Control Module ECM detects that the commanded state of the driver and the actual state of the control circuit do not match.

Assuming that your MIL light was not on, the code was logged once and has not been logged again, or was logged more than once but not enough to trigger the MIL light. Most OBDII vehicles require a fault to be set multiple times within so many drive cycles before notifying the driver.

In your case, the code may have been caused by the transmission's hydraulic pump loosing prime - line pressure failed to reach spec.

I am not overly kind to my Liberty and commonly dump the trans in gear before the starter stops spinning even after an overnight shutdown. Sometimes the trans fails to engage for the first few seconds when I do this. I am guessing that you have also experienced this. The slow build in hydraulic pressure may be due to a defective trans oil filter that was used in some vehicles.

There are two filters in the transmission; a spin on inside the trans oil pan as well as the usual pickup filter. Chrysler claims no harm is done by this noted defect. It probably at that time the code was register. Add some more fluid ,then it was Ok. Can I erase it? Mine has a 42RLE transmission thanks anyway for you good info. You could erase the code but it should clear itself eventually if not logged again.

This information is relayed to the transmission control module TCM where it is used to determine control of various outputs, such as the pressure control solenoids. The TFP directly affects transmission shift quality. Some transmissions will have multiple transmission fluid sensors.

The TFP is a type of sensor called a transducer, which changes internal resistance relative to pressure. The powertrain control module PCM sends a reference voltage typically 5 volts to the sensor. The sensor then changes its internal resistance in relation to line pressure and sends a return signal voltage to the PCM.

The TFP is often located inside the transmission or the valve body, making it difficult to access. Begin by checking the transmission fluid level and condition. If the transmission fluid is low, determine the cause and repair as needed. Next, check for technical service bulletins TSBs regarding the concern. Repair as needed. If no problems are found up to this point, move forward with a sequential diagnosis of the system. This site uses Akismet to reduce spam.

Now don't ask yourself; What should you do with P code? The solution is here :.This page is for personal, non-commercial use. P is the OBD-II generic code for a fault involving the pressure of the fluid inside of the transmission. This could mean that there is too much pressure inside of the transmission or that there is not enough pressure inside of the transmission. Often, a lack of transmission fluid pressure is caused by a lack of transmission fluid. If fluid has leaked out or otherwise escaped due to a mechanical failure, then there will not be adequate fluid levels inside of the transmission for proper operation.

Around this same time, the smell of overheated transmission may become noticeable.

P0841 - Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch 'A' Circuit Range/Performance

The smell is similar to that of burning oil. Accompanying this may also be smoke from the transmission area, though this only occurs if there is actively leaking fluid in the area. An improper fluid level may also cause rough shifting and transmission slippage. Automatic transmissions may have trouble shifting at the proper times. A mechanic will diagnose the P code with an advanced OBD-II code scanner that can retrieve the factory readings from the vehicle.

The certified technician will view the trouble codes in real time and see exactly when the P code was stored. Then the code will be reset and the vehicle will be taken for a test drive. If the code appears again during the test drive, then the transmission fluid pressure is the likely culprit. Wiring will be tested using a multimeter and the factory test points of the circuits surrounding the transmission.

The technician will also check for loose, damaged, or corroded wiring around the transmission sensor circuitry. They will also check the transmission for visible fluid leaks. There are a number of mistakes that commonly arise when the P code appears. Sometimes the technician will under-react and simply fill or replace the fluid in instances when the transmission needs to be rebuilt to function properly.

Other times, the transmission itself is totally fine and the fluid itself is low or too old to be useful. An overheating transmission is a serious problem, and because of this, servicing an overheating transmission often involves taking the transmission out completely.

This is not always necessary. The P code can be quite serious. It can indicate that the transmission is about to overheat or otherwise fail. The only way to avoid major repairs after the P code is to get the vehicle serviced right away.

If that is done, then there is a chance that the problem can be solved relatively inexpensively and quickly. Either way, the problem should be diagnosed as soon as the P code appears. The P code can vary a lot as far as severity is concerned. The problem could be a simple lack of fluid, or it could indicate a serious mechanical failure of the transmission.

The only way to find out is to have the problem diagnosed by a qualified technician.
